Thirty-three swimmers aged from six to 80 and several supporters braved a cool, southerly onshore breeze to participate in the 100 Lap Challenge in Tatura last Saturday.
The annual event, held to support the Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Aged Care, was held in at the Tatura swimming pool, which was a warm and inviting 25°C.
‘‘There were five swimmers who tackled 100 laps individually including Sacha Finlayson, Jill Clapperton, Trevor Anselmi, Colin Magnay and John Stewart,’’ event co-organiser Gary Whyte said.
‘‘There was a large contingent of young swimmers and there were many family and friends teams, which was great.’’
Mr Whyte said the hospital ladies auxiliary once again provided a delicious morning tea and welcome hot coffee for all the swimmers and supporters.
‘‘Due to wonderful support from many in the community, the event raised more than $2500,’’ he said.
‘‘Ray Rokahr from the hospital Tatura Reference Group said the funds raised would be used towards the provision of specialised beds for the hospital.’’
Mr Whyte said a special thanks went to Aquamoves staff for the early start opening the pool on the day and for their assistance throughout the season.
‘‘We also had a number of businesses sponsor the event, including Tatura Dental Care, Dawes Vary Riordan and Tatura Hot Bread,’’ he said.
The annual event highlights the importance of two of Tatura’s major assets, the hospital, Parkvilla and the Tatura Swimming Pool.
‘‘It’s important to see the communities continued willingness to support both,’’ Mr Whyte said.
■ The challenge will be on again on February 24 next year.
