Sport, Recreation and Youth Affairs Minster the Hon James Merlino officially opened new dry area facilities at Aquamoves today and announced funding for more works at the centre.

The recently completed works included a new fitness studio and an expansion of the existing gym.

Manager Leisure Services Tony Tranter said the $1.3 million project allowed the centre to better cater for all its customers.

“Last year, about 500,000 people visited the centre which provides a safe and social venue to maintain and build on fitness levels for people of all walks of life in Greater Shepparton,” Mr Tranter said.

“The new works will allow 20,000 more visits each year and better facilities for people with special needs.

“The new studio means we can run two classes at the same time while expanding the gym allows for more equipment at the gym and future growth.”

Planning for upgrades to the dry area began in 2005 as part of an Aquamoves master plan. The works were funded by the Council and the Department for Planning and Community Development – Better Pools Program.

The dry area works were part of stage one, which will also include the re-development of the outdoor area with a smaller leisure pool, re-opening of the dive pool and the provision of shade and seating.

Mr Tranter welcomed funding announcements made by Mr Merlino for stage two works.  As part of stage two, a zero depth “splash park” will be built to cater for all ages and all abilities, as well as a beach area, shade and barbecues.

Work is scheduled to begin mid-2008 on remaining components of stage one and stage two works.
