Nominations opened this week for the 2013 Australia Day Awards, and Greater Shepparton City Council is urging residents in the municipality to nominate eligible people for the awards.
"If you know someone who has worked hard in the community, who has contributed in some way to make the community a better place, I invite you to nominate them for an award," said Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Michael Polan.
"There are so many areas where people's hard work and community spirit, from sport and the arts to service clubs and schools. These awards provide a wonderful opportunity to recognise this hard work and really celebrate what's great about Greater Shepparton."
To promote awareness of the awards, Council will be conducting a Nomination Drive. A van covered with the Australia Day logo and the slogan, "Celebrate What's Great!" will appear throughout Greater Shepparton conducting promotional activities for the duration of the nomination period, which closes on 1 December with the exception of Murchison & Tatura which close 23 November 2012.
The awards are being called for from the towns of Shepparton, Mooroopna, Murchison, Tatura, Toolamba, Arcadia and Dookie. All of the towns have categories for Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the year, and this year a new category of award has been introduced for Community Event of the Year. From all of these, the Mayor will choose a Greater Shepparton Citizen, Young Citizen, and Community Event of the Year.
Additional categories offered in different towns are:
- Shepparton Senior Citizen award, Sports award, Academic award
- Tatura Sports award, Environment award, Business award, Academic award
- Murchison Sports award, Junior Sports award, Education award, Club or Service Organisation award
- Mooroopna Sports award
- Toolamba Community Service award
People wishing to nominate a person, organisation or event can download a form from the Australia Day section on Council's website.
