Shepparton has taken out the title of second best walking town in Australia, behind Noosa, as part of the competition held by ‘Prevention magazine’ in conjunction with Channel 7’s ‘Sunrise’ morning program.

Voting by the public closed 30 June and the results were announced on Sunrise yesterday.

Shepparton was nominated by viewers and readers several months ago and was shortlisted in the Top 10 Australia wide with Narooma NSW, Port Macquarie NSW, Noosa QLD, Townsville QLD, Bright VIC, Adelaide SA, Launceston TAS, Esperance WA and Canberra ACT.

Following public voting the winner was announced with Noosa taking out the overall title of ‘Australia's Best Walking Town' with Shepparton in second spot.

Greater Shepparton Mayor Geoff Dobson thanked everyone who voted.

"It is great to know that our community values our beautiful walking tracks and programs and more importantly the wonderful lifestyle walking brings to our community," Cr Dobson said.

"We were told one of the main reasons Shepparton made the Top 10 was based on viewers and readers commenting on the fantastic walking programs Council runs such as the Twilight Stroll and Pedometer Challenge.

"People also highlighted the beauty of the natural bush environment that is so pivotal to our great shared path network."
