The importance of water safety is being promoted at Aquamoves this week, to coincide with the national Play It Safe By The Water campaign.

Aquamoves Aquatic Coordinator Lindy Baldi says it is important to educate children on the potential dangers associated with water.

“Living in the Goulburn Valley means we are likely to come into contact with rivers and dams and children need to be taught about water safety from a young age,” says Ms Baldi.

“This week many participants in our swim school will have the opportunity to enter the water fully clothed and to experience wearing a lifejacket,” she says.

“This will help young swimmers understand the need for lifejackets and realise how difficult it can be to stay afloat while fully clothed,” adds Ms Baldi.

“As well as teaching swimming skills, our program also includes a strong focus on survival techniques and this education may one day help to save a life,” says Ms Baldi.

Ms Baldi also stresses the importance of constant and active supervision around water and says education about water safety should start at an early age.

“Particularly as we are entering into the summer holiday period, it is important that people are vigilant about water safety,” says Ms Baldi.

“Royal Lifesaving Victoria guidelines state that children under the age of 10 years must be supervised by a person over the age of 16 years at all times,” she explains.

“All Greater Shepparton City Council pools abide by these guidelines. Lifeguards are always on duty however it is the responsibility of adults to ensure they are properly supervising their children,” she says.
