Locals will have more free opportunities to see the world-class, Australian exclusive exhibition, The Golden Age of Colour Prints, according to Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Jenny Houlihan.

"Our figures are showing that around 68 per cent of visitors to the exhibition are from beyond the region, including some interstate and even international visitors," Cr Houlihan said. "However I would like to encourage local people to ensure that they don't miss out on this amazing exhibition, featuring works from one of the most significant collections of Japanese prints in the world."

Residents of Greater Shepparton are already able to visit the exhibition for free on Tuesdays, but SAM is extending this to include the weekend of 20 and 21 April.

The exhibition has been so popular that SAM's public program has had to be extended to accommodate demand with many more workshops added to the Art Museum's school holidays.

"The appeal of this exhibition is remarkable," Cr Houlihan said. "Over half of the people attending are new visitors to SAM. There really is something in the program for everyone, from the display of the 96 works themselves to the free workshops and cultural activities hosted by people from the Japanese community on particular weekends and SAM's regular holiday program for all ages."

A special Mother's Day event has also been planned around this exhibition, "A Japanese Infused High Tea," to be held on Sunday 12 May at 11am.

The event ticket will include a Japanese inspired high tea and lunch, with a delicious lunch of savoury and sweet dishes inspired by Japanese culinary traditions. Guests will be entertained by the sounds of the Shakuhachi, the Japanese flute, with a performance by Anne Norman, through a theatrical journey about the history of tea and the Japanese tea ceremony.

Tickets for this event can be purchased from the Riverlinks Box Office in the Eastbank Centre, by phoning (03) 5832 9511, or online at www.riverlinksvenues.com.au. Adults $80, children under 12 years $45. Included in the ticket is an exquisite hand-made ceramic tea bowl created by artist Angie Russi, a ticket to The Golden Age of Colour Prints exhibition and copy of the exhibition catalogue.

Book now as places are limited. For more information on this exhibition and SAM, visit www.sheppartonartmuseum.com.au.
