Some 63 swimmers helped raise just less than $10 000 at this year’s MS 24-hour Mega Swim at Aquamoves on the weekend.

‘‘I was very happy with the participation numbers,’’ Shepparton MS 24-hour Mega Swim community host Damien Stevens said.

Mr Stevens said five teams started swimming at noon Saturday and swam non-stop for 24 hours until noon yesterday.

‘‘It got quite cool overnight, but every team always had someone in the pool and managed to get through,’’ Mr Stevens said.

‘‘The water was kept at a warm 29°C and we had local musicians entertaining us throughout the event, which was great.’’

Mr Stevens said the local Lions Club cooked dinner and breakfast for the swimmers and Barry Fleming, the co-ordinator of an MS peers group in Shepparton, shared his journey with MS.

‘‘It’s just a great community event for a great cause,’’ Mr Stevens said.

Mr Stevens, who raised a record $1290, said the highest fundraising team was the Ken McNamara Real Estate team, while the best dressed team was Just Keep Swimming.

‘‘Our youth award went to Alice O’Brien for good team spirit and the highest funds raised for a young person,’’ he said.
