Greater Shepparton ratepayers will soon receive their 2013/2014 rates notice in the mail.

Residents will also receive an information brochure explaining budget highlights and challenges, understanding your rates notice, revaluations and how to pay your rates.

Greater Shepparton Director Business Justin Finlayson said rates notices were being distributed later than in previous years.

"We have received a number of calls from customers enquiring about their rates notice and when they will receive them. The notices are later than in previous years due to having to calculate and include the Fire Services Levy and setting up the process for the new 10 monthly payment option," Mr Finlayson said.

"The payment date for the first instalment has been extended to allow our ratepayers sufficient time to make this payment, as we understand it can often be difficult to find a larger sum of money in a short time frame.

"You will notice a number of changes to your rates this year. We have introduced an option to pay by 10 monthly payments, to help reduce the burden in finding a large amount of money in one go.

"Council is also required to collect the Fire Services Levy on behalf on the Victorian Government. This will be shown on your rates notice as a separate item and the government has provided an information flyer for property owners which is included with rates notices. Council does not keep this money; it is passed on to the government.

"If you are having trouble paying your rates by the due date, please contact Council and have a chat to our staff who will work out an alternate arrangement with you."

For people who choose to take up the option to pay their rates by 10 monthly payments, you are required to fill out a direct debit payment form from Council.

For those people who choose to pay their rates by instalments, the first payment is now due on 11 October.

For people paying their rates in a lump sum payment, the due date for payment is 17 February 2014.

An extensive range of payment methods are offered, including online at www.greatershepparton.com.au, or in person at Council's Welsford Street Office.
